Kidspiration - Graphic Organizer

A graphic organizer is an innovative and engaging method of stimulating creative thinking. For this assignment, I had the choice of developing a graphic organizer with either Inspiration or Kidspiration; I chose Kidspiration.  Kidspiration is more equipped for teaching grades K-5 and Inspiration 6-adult.  Utilizing such a resource in the classroom promotes visual thinking and learning, an effective method for teaching students of all ages how to think and how to learn.  It enables students to express thoughts and ideas in an individualized, visual, and insightful manner; it enables teachers to reach a variety of learning styles and actively engage the students in the learning process.  I developed a concept map in Kidspiration to teach kindergartners about the four seasons and which months and holidays belong to each season.  My color-coded concept map includes clip art and six hyperlinks to internet resources for additional information on the topic.  Please click on the Kidspiration link below or the screen shot above for a larger view of my completed Kidspiration project.

Being a visual learner myself, I can recognize and appreciate the potential this resource has to offer both teachers and students.  For example, it would be an effective tool to introduce a new topic and assess students’ knowledge at the beginning, during or conclusion of a unit.  Incorporating Kidspiration into the classroom strengthens word recognition, vocabulary, comprehension, and written expression.  In addition, it builds reasoning and problem solving skills.
